If you purchase an unfinished wheel, it will be necessary to treat it with a finishing wax or polish, in order to preserve the wood. Even if you have an older wheel it is a good idea to treat the wood from time to time.
The wheel will need regular oiling when in use. It should also be oiled if it is new or hasn’t been used for a while. Very light oil should be used. Do not use grease or oil that will gum up or get sticky.
The following parts of the wheel should be cleaned and oiled regularly.
- The axle of the wheel
- The leather connector between the footman and the treadle
- The bearing of the maidens holding the spindle
- The crank bearings and rods
- All other moving parts
- Use an oiled rag to oil the spindle rod
Many brands of spinning wheels like Louet wheels are very low maintenance, and do not need to be oiled
The hooks on the flyer may also need to be replaced from time to time. Some wheel manufacturers will offer a maintenance kit that includes the flyer hooks; drive band, leather or plastic connectors for the treadle, and oil.
Do not store your wheel in direct sunlight, near heat, or in an humid environment. If you do, your wheel may warp and you will need to find a specialist to repair it. Or you may have to replace it all together.
